Mental Health Services

Care that's clinically sound and culturally yours.

Mente y Corazón is MiA's licensed behavioral health program built for the Latino community and grounded in trauma-informed care. We're the only program in Spokane that specializes in domestic violence and sexual assault from a Latine perspective. Our program is held to the full clinical standards of the State of Washington. Because you deserve both: a provider who truly gets you, and care you can trust.

Nuestros Servicios

Our Mental Health Services

Professional care, from people who understand your world.

Healing looks different for everyone and for many survivors in our community, it starts not with a diagnosis, but with a feeling. Something feels heavy. Sleep doesn't come easily. Trust doesn't either. Relationships that should feel safe, don't.

The Mente y Corazón behavioral health program was built for exactly that moment.

As a Washington State licensed behavioral health facility, we meet all state regulatory requirements for clinical mental health services, which means our participants receive care that is both professionally credentialed and deeply rooted in Latino culture and lived experience. We don't ask you to choose between quality and belonging. Here, you get both.

Our approach

We offer individual, family and group therapy, online or in person. All services are:

  • Trauma-informed: we understand how trauma lives in the body, the mind, and in patterns you may not even recognize yet

  • Culturally responsive: your language, your values, your community are not barriers here; they are part of the healing

  • Clinically grounded: delivered by licensed professionals meeting Washington State behavioral health standards

What we help with

Our work is centered on trauma treatment, but trauma rarely announces itself by name. We see it in:

  • Anxiety or a persistent sense of being on edge

  • Depression, fatigue, or difficulty feeling present

  • Sleeplessness — trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or ever feeling truly rested

  • Deep distrust, even toward people who want to support you

  • Difficulty forming or sustaining close relationships

  • Disconnection from yourself, your body, or your daily life

You don't need to have the right words for what you're experiencing. You just need to walk in.

Frequently Asked Questions

Questions are welcome here, starting with yours.

1.Do I need a referral or a diagnosis to come?

No. You don't need a referral from a doctor, and you don't need to arrive with a diagnosis. If something feels hard and you're looking for support, that's enough. You can reach out directly — we'll figure out the rest together.

2.What languages are sessions offered in?

Sessions are offered in Spanish and English. You can speak whichever language feels most natural to you, including switching between both.

3.What if I can't afford it?
We believe cost should never be the reason someone doesn't get care. We accept [list insurance plans], offer a sliding scale fee for those with limited income, and sometimes have funding available to support uninsured participants.

When you call, just let us know your situation and we'll work with you.

4.How do I start?

Please call us at Ph. 509-994-9840 between 9am-4pm, or email Monica Rey Serantes, MHC, at at Monicar@miaspokane.org to see if we're a good fit for you.

5.Is my information confidential?

Yes. As a licensed behavioral health facility, we follow all state and federal privacy laws, including HIPAA. What you share with your therapist stays between you and your care team, with only the narrow exceptions required by law (such as imminent safety concerns). We'll walk you through this clearly in your first session.

6. Do you serve people outside of MiA's DV/SA programs?

Yes. While our roots are in serving survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Latino community, Mente y Corazón is open to broader community members. Contact us to find out if we're a good fit.

7.How long does treatment last?

There's no set timeline. Treatment length depends on your goals, your needs, and what feels right for you. Some people find meaningful progress in a few months; others benefit from longer-term support. Your therapist will work with you to find a pace and approach that makes sense for your life.

8.For providers: How do I refer a client to Mente y Corazón?

We welcome referrals from domestic violence and sexual assault programs, primary care providers, courts, social service agencies, schools, and other community partners.

To refer a client, contact us at Ph. 509-994-9840 or Monicar@miaspokane.org. We're happy to consult with you about fit, clinical approach, and current availability before you refer.
